Savchenko/Massot win gold in pair skating

Pyeongchang (SID) Alyona Savchenko and Bruno Massot fulfilled the dream of a gold medal that was hardly thought possible in the Olympic pair skating competition. The vice world champions from Oberstdorf won in Pyeongchang after a very strong performance in the free program ahead of the world champions Sui Wenjing/Han Cong from China and Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford (Canada). The German champions only took fourth place in the short program and had little hope of making it to the top, but they impressed across the board in the decision with 159,31 points. "This is the moment of my life. It's an incredible story," said Savchenko about the triumph. The French-born Massot was happy and relieved after his mistake in the short program. "It was a hard day yesterday after the mistake. From fourth place to gold, that's incredible." Ukrainian-born Savchenko won Olympic bronze in 2010 and 2014 with her then partner Robin Szolkowy and hoped to finally win gold - she did it. In South Korea, Szolkowy looked after the European champions Yevgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov (Olympic athletes from Russia), who came fourth. Annika Hocke and Ruben Blommaert (Berlin) took 16th and last place in the free skate final.
