World Chess Championship: Fourth draw between Carlsen and Caruana

In the fourth game in London, both opponents agreed to a draw for the fourth time, making it 2-2 before the second day of rest on Wednesday.

Carlsen, playing with the white pieces, began with the English opening, but was never able to put any decisive pressure on his opponent. After 34 moves, the fourth meeting ended again with a division of points.

“Caruana was better prepared with the black stones so far,” Carlsen admitted afterwards: “My position seemed a little better to me visually, but there was no opportunity to make progress. That was a little disappointing." Caruana explained: “I never thought I was in great danger. I always considered the final to be even.”

Carlsen was crowned the second-youngest world champion in history in 2013 at the age of 22 and has since successfully defended his title twice. He has been leading the world rankings since 2011, with Caruana in second place and prevailed against seven opponents at the Candidates Tournament in Berlin in March.

The prize money for the event, which is scheduled to run until November 28th, is one million euros. A maximum of twelve games are played with regular consideration time.

For a win you get one point, for a draw both opponents get half a point each. If a player reaches 6,5 points early, the duel is over. If there is a tie after the twelfth game, a tiebreak with shortened playing time will be played, as was the case at the 2016 World Cup between Carlsen and the Russian Sergej Karjakin.
