Seppelt: “There has to be Plan B for the Olympics”

Potsdam (SID) Investigative journalist Hajo Seppelt sees the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) under pressure after recent revelations about blatant deficiencies in the storage of doping samples before the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. “Now there has to be Plan B for the Olympics,” said Seppelt in an interview with the SID. The high-tech bottles for the doping samples are manufactured by the Swiss company Berlinger. According to research in which Seppelt was involved with the ARD doping editorial team, these supposedly safe containers can be opened without any problems. "There is a market leader, this Swiss product from Berlinger. It looks like you have to assume that the dominant market position has meant that it is now difficult to find alternatives. At least that's how I can imagine it," said Seppelt. According to Seppelt, it is unclear what plan B could look like: "There is a lot of helplessness. Maybe something will be pulled out of the hat, we are now excited about that. As of today, however, one has to say that the doping control system is not safe." Seppelt described the results of the latest research as a “declaration of bankruptcy of the system”. This is “full of holes and actually no longer acceptable.” Opening and resealing the bottles was “very easy in the end”. "Of course you have to think a little bit. We just wanted to know: Is something like in Sochi repeatable? We now have to say that it is repeatable. It may even have already been repeated. You can't rule that out," said Seppelt.
