Seven dead in dragon boat team training accident

As rescue workers and teammates said on Tuesday, the boat capsized at sunrise in strong waves - four male and three female crew members died. 14 others were rescued and taken to hospitals for further care.

"There are a lot of rocks in this area. It's possible that they hit their heads against them," local disaster officer Ong Fulgencio told the French news agency AFP by telephone. The team had been training for the Kaohsiung City Cup in Taiwan in early November, said team member Remedy Aquino, who was not aboard the boat at the time of the accident.

Dragon boat racing is very popular in many parts of Asia. At the World Games in Duisburg in 2005 and in Kaohsiung in 2009, dragon boat races were part of the competition program. The German Dragon Boat Association (DDV) was founded in Hamburg in 1990. Internationally, the sport is organized in the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) and the International Canoe Federation (ICF).

In 2007, the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) recognized dragon boating as an independent sport and accepted the International Dragon Boat Federations (IDBF) as a member.
