Sinner and Wierer in concert with the greats

Jannik Sinner and Dorothea Wierer are two of the best athletes in South Tyrol - and have long been national and international celebrities. Sinner, who is only 19 years old, is now much more than just a talent in the tennis scene and proved in 2020 that he has a career ahead of him among the greats: The man from Sexten won his first ATP tournament and came to the French Open into the quarterfinals and will end the year at position 37 in the world rankings. The hype surrounding the young South Tyrolean is huge.

Meanwhile, Dorothea Wierer has achieved something that not many people will be able to do: on the one hand, she won the overall World Cup for the second time in a row (and also two gold medals at the home World Championships in Antholz), on the other hand, she did a sport like biathlon - which is actually only in is popular in the typical winter sports resorts - known throughout Italy. The speedster has long since shot her way into the hearts of her fans – in South Tyrol but also outside of it. In a row with Immobile & Co. Of course, the achievements of the two top athletes did not go unnoticed by Italy's largest sports newspaper, which nominated the two South Tyroleans in several categories for the “Gazzetta Sports Awards”. Sinner is nominated for the title of “Sportsman of the Year”, Wierer in the “Sportsman of the Year” category, and both are nominated for the “Exploit of the Year” category, i.e. Rise of the Year. There are six athletes in each category, many of which have well-known names. Sinner, for example, has to compete with soccer superstar Ciro Immobile, Moto GP ace Franco Morbidelli or Olympic swimming champion Gregorio Paltrinieri, while Wierer has to compete with skiing overall World Cup winner Federica Brignone or snowboard phenomenon Michela Moioli.

In addition to the categories mentioned, prizes will also be awarded in the categories “Paralympic Athlete of the Year”, “Discovery of the Year”, “Performance of the Year”, “Team of the Year” and “Coach of the Year”. The fans will make a big difference: they can still visit until December 12th Gazzetta website vote, after which a jury - also based on the fan votes - decides on the winners, who will be announced on December 14th at the Gazzetta Gala.
