Cross-country skiing: Haga redeems Norway - Carl in 19th place

Pyeongchang (SID) Surprise woman Ragnhild Haga redeemed the Norwegian cross-country skier at the Winter Olympics. The 27-year-old won the 10 km freestyle and secured the Norge women's first gold medal after two victories over rivals Sweden. Former junior world champion Victoria Carl (Zella-Mehlis) achieved the best German result in 19th place. Haga, who has only celebrated one World Cup victory in her career, won in 25:00,5 minutes, clearly ahead of the Swede Charlotte Kalla (+20,3 seconds), who triumphed in the skiathlon on Saturday. “When Ragnhild Mowinckel won silver in the giant slalom today, we decided that today is Ragnhild Day,” said Haga. Bronze was shared at the same time by record Winter Olympian Marit Björgen from Norway and the Finn Krista Pärmäkoski (+31,9). Carl started quickly and had his sights set on an even better placement for a long time. "I'm a bit overwhelmed and happy that it worked out so well. I had almost no wind in the first lap, which was an advantage," said the 22-year-old. Stefanie Böhler (Ibach) and Sandra Ringwald (Schonach), on the other hand, only took places 25 and 26. Meanwhile, 37-year-old Björgen missed out on becoming the first winter athlete in history to win her seventh gold medal, as she did in skiathlon, and at the same time become the oldest individual winner at the Winter Olympics. Nicole Fessel was not at the start in her parade distance. The 34-year-old from Oberstdorf had already missed the sprint due to breathing difficulties and will now be rested for the relay.
