Cross-country skiing: Ringwald misses the sprint semi-finals - Bing is two hundredths short

Pyeongchang (SID) The German cross-country skiers missed out on reaching the semi-finals of the classic sprint at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang and thus suffered another setback. "What can I say. If you're not lucky, you'll also have bad luck," said German sports director Andreas Schlütter after a competition in which Sandra Ringwald's 13th place was the best German result. The 27-year-old from Schonach, the biggest hope of the German sprint team, took third place in her quarter-finals after a good performance in the prologue and thus missed out on one of the first two places needed to advance to the semi-finals. Ringwald was 67 hundredths short of reaching the round of the last twelve as one of two “lucky losers”. Four years ago in Sochi, Denise Herrmann, who has since switched to biathlon, reached the semi-finals as a medal candidate and came eighth. In the men's race, Thomas Bing (Dermbach) failed even narrower than Ringwald. He was just two hundredths behind the Frenchman Baptiste Gros in the final sprint of the last quarter-final and was eliminated in third place in the six-man race. “I can hardly say whether it was bad luck or inability,” said Bing. Falls by three other runners in this race gave Bing, who had impressed with eleventh place in the skiathlon, the chance to make it to the semi-finals. Sebastian Eisenlauer (Sonthofen) had previously been eliminated as last in his quarter-finals with no chance. In the women's category, Elisabeth Schicho (Schliersee) and Katharina Hennig (Oberwiesenthal) also failed as last in their quarter-finals. Reaching the knockout round was already a success for the two Olympic debutants. Sprint specialist Hanna Kolb (Buchenberg) surprisingly missed the quarter-finals as 36th in the qualification.
