“Sport is a cultural asset”

As last year, the general meeting was held under the motto Sport{CLUB}. This guiding principle is intended to illustrate the importance of sport for the social cohesion of our society and to show the important role that South Tyrolean amateur sports clubs play in this regard. “Sport is more than just exercise. Sport is a cultural asset. He makes an important cultural contribution to society. It is meaningful, creates identity, it conveys rules and values and has an integrative effect,” says VSS chairman Günther Andergassen. The past year was marked by sports policy decisions due to the pandemic. The VSS was in continuous discussions with the state's political representatives and the state governor and state councilor for sport Arno Kompatscher. “The VSS was a trustworthy partner during this difficult time. Now it will be a big task to get everyone back and motivated for sport. This is a worthwhile task for young people, for sport and for society,” said Kompatscher. In addition to the corona-related restrictions on sporting activities and life as a whole, there was often uncertainty among club officials regarding the current measures, ordinances and regulations. The VSS performed its advisory role and informed the clubs through circulars and information campaigns. In order to reach as many people as possible, the VSS's training and further education offerings will be available to everyone free of charge this year. As is well known, sporting activities in the 17th funding programs of the VSS could only be carried out to a limited extent last year. It was therefore all the more important that the close cooperation between the VSS, the Raiffeisen Association of South Tyrol and the affiliated Raiffeisen banks could be extended for another five years. “Without the generous support of the Raiffeisen organizations in South Tyrol, such extensive youth support would not be possible,” said VSS chairman Günther Andergassen. “Raiffeisen and the VSS represent the same values. The sports clubs do valuable, invaluable work for society on a voluntary basis, beyond just sports activities. By supporting sports through the Raiffeisen organizations, we also want to honor and support this commitment,” emphasized Raiffeisen Association chairman Herbert Von Leon. The new situation last year also gave the VSS a chance to rethink and implement projects. The VSS junior team, a youth committee in the association, successfully started its activities with the online lecture series “Sports Nutrition Compact”. In addition, numerous clubs took part in the first South Tyrolean Sports Week and started their own initiatives. With the support of the VSS junior team, the second sports week is to be announced this year. The VSS anniversary celebration, which was planned on VSS's birthday, will be rescheduled this fall in order to properly celebrate 50 years of successful VSS model. Finally, there was great praise for the VSS member clubs. “I would like to express my sincere compliments and thanks to our member clubs for supporting the various regulations in solidarity. “This is sport as we value it: value-based, fair and respectful,” says Andergassen.
