Athlete of the Year 2021: It starts on Tuesday

For the 34th time, the readers of the daily newspaper Dolomites and SportNews coordinated together with the South Tyrolean sports journalists. From Tuesday, November 23rd to Saturday, November 27th, the secret of who won the race will be revealed bit by bit. The daily newspaper has been around since 1987 Dolomites organized South Tyrolean athlete election. Since 1988, the winners have always been duly celebrated and honored at a gala organized by the Südtiroler Sporthilfe.

Then came Corona: Last year, the South Tyrolean athletes' election was completely canceled because sport came to a complete standstill between the beginning of March and the end of summer. Then professional sport started moving again, albeit with restrictions. Nevertheless, it was clear early on that the Sporthilfe Gala would not take place in 2021 either.

On the one hand, because it requires a longer organizational start-up time. On the other hand, because the professional athletes being honored did not want to be exposed to an increased risk of contact and therefore infection at a gala with many guests. Nevertheless, the sports editorial team decided Dolomites out of respect for the outstanding achievements of South Tyrol's top athletes this year, to organize the 34th South Tyrolean athletes' election.
