“I would completely withdraw the money from this institution. There is zero interest in prominent athletes being exposed,” said the 46-year-old in an interview with the Stuttgarter Zeitung and the Stuttgarter Nachrichten.

Above all, the low number of positive cases makes Simon doubt the anti-doping system. “NADA wants to tell us that they are unable to detect anything meaningful with supposedly the world’s best analytics,” he said, adding: “Tell us why we should even do this Muppet Show anymore. This question simply has to be asked - by those who pump the money into the test system.

Simon gave up his years-long fight against doping, including for the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA, in 2017 and announced that he no longer wanted to comment publicly. Recently, however, he has been speaking out again more and more. “I examine and advise many underage athletes. And my obligation as a doctor is to educate them and their parents about what awaits them if they enter competitive sports and sign the NADA anti-doping agreement," he said of his motivation.

Lack of deterrence Simon also did not want to accept the argument about the deterrent effect of doping tests: “How much deterrence is there anyway? If the deterrent is simply that the athletes choose even more criminal and invasive procedures, the consequence should be: Then get rid of the tests!” he said.
