Strong cast at “8. Ötzi Alpine Marathon”

In the men's race, three out of four winners are at the start: the double winners Heinz Verbnjak (2009, 2006) and Stefan Kogler (2007, 2008) from Austria as well as Roland Osele from Meran, winner of the first Ötzi Alpine Marathon in 2004. The extended circle of favorites includes the Vinschger region Winter triathlete Anton Steiner, sixth in 2009, the Dorf Tiroler Transalp Tour winner Philipp Götsch, the Naturnser Harald Gamper, the Austrian Stefan Wiedauer (8th place in 2009) and the German Konrad Lex (9th place in 2009).

With the former mountain bike marathon Italian champion Alexandra Hober, the women's team winner from 2004 and last year's runner-up in the individual ranking will be at the start. The Merano native faces competition from Andrea Innerhofer from Olang, who came second behind Laura Mazzucco in 2007 and third behind Hober in 2009, and from Marita Stauffer from Austria, winner in 2005 and sixth in 2009.

Barbara Gruber, individual winner in 2009 and record holder at the Ötzi Alpine Marathon, is taking part in the relay race with the Alpenstoff (A) team this year together with Bettina Schorn and Elke Lechner as a ski mountaineer. One of her toughest opponents in this category is the team eatandwin.de (D) with Claudia Till, Ellen Clemens and Christine Schleich. Clemens and Schlicht won the ÖAM 2008, but with a different starting driver. In 2009 they came second.

The top favorites in the men's relay competition are the BOGN DA NIA team with the former Austrian professional cyclist Hans Peter Obwaller, the strong Sarner runner Hannes Rungger and the Fassan ski mountaineer and long-distance specialist Ivo Zulian; then the experienced South Tyrolean team WF Mechanik with Dario Steinacher, Günter Angerer and Oswald Weißenhorn as well as the Alpenstoff/corratec-Quest team with Andreas Ortner, Helmut Schiessl and Anton Palzer.

The individual athletes start at 9 a.m. in front of the Naturns town hall; the 75 teams of three start at 10 a.m. The participants are scheduled to arrive on Grawand from 12.30 p.m. The mountain bikers have to cover 24,2 km and conquer a total of 1.570 m; The running route measures 11,8 km and has an altitude difference of 495 m, while the length of the final ski touring route is 6,2 km and 1.201 meters in altitude.

Austria leads the nations rankings

Three countries are listed in the national rankings of the individual competition. With seven wins, Austria leads Italy with four and Germany with one win. Athletes from five countries are represented in the relay nations ranking: Austria also leads with six wins, ahead of Italy and Germany with four, New Zealand with two and Belgium with one. In the relay nations ranking, more nations appear as editions because the three-man relays are often made up of participants from different nations.

Strong cast at “8. Ötzi Alpine Marathon”

Around 500 participants from eight nations are registered for the “8th Ötzi Alpine Marathon” on April 30th: including six winners. The strenuous extreme triathlon over 42,2 km and 3266 meters in altitude from Naturns to the Senales Glacier was held for the first time in 2004.
