South Tyrol dominates the Italian orienteering championships

Initially the competitions were held over the long distance. In summer temperatures, the athletes had to go through extremely difficult karst terrain. Typical features are stony ground, numerous depressions, many stone walls and Mediterranean vegetation with some low vegetation, which limits both walkability and visibility. The tracks were correspondingly demanding - and once again a lot of map-related experience was required. The South Tyrolean orienteers obviously brought these with them.

The 41-year-old Mikhail Mamleev (Terlan orienteer) was able to prevail in the men's elite category ahead of his teammate Klaus Schgaguler. Mamleev, the former European champion who ended his international career two years ago, had to complain about a few minor mistakes, but hardly anyone could complete the run completely error-free in this terrain. “The legs are still fast enough and the head played along too,” he said at the finish. Like Mamleev, Schgaguler suffered some loss of time and was 90 seconds behind after a good 20 minutes of running time. “It is still an honor to take second place behind champion Mamleev,” said Shgaguler. Last year's Italian champion Michele Caraglio (CUS Bologna) took third place.

The women's victory also went to South Tyrol. The also very experienced Christine Kirchlechner (SC Meran) won the title in a confident manner and won with a big lead over her teammate Carlotta Scalet, who actually comes from Trentino and has been running for Meran since this year. Kirchlechner reported that she had difficulty concentrating fully on the run in the first part and therefore made a few minor mistakes. After the first 15 minutes she had the situation completely under control and was able to finish her race in a superior manner. Nicole Scalet (US Primiero) took third place.

The youngsters are doing their best

Vera Chiusole (SC Meran) was crowned Italian champion in the girls up to 16 category. Lukas Patscheider (TOL), favorite in the boys 18 and under category, made a major mistake towards the end of his run that cost him the win. He had to settle for the bronze medal.

Further titles for South Tyrol were won by Sabine Rottensteiner (TOL) in the W35 category, Verena Troi (TOL) in the W40 category, Oleg Anuchkin (TOL) in the M50 age group and Rudi Mair (TOL/M55). Sonia Rampado also took first place in the category for girls up to 10 years old, although no title is awarded. There were further medals for Dario Beltramba (TOL, 2nd M 50), Andreas Weitlaner (Haunold Orienteering Team, 2nd M40), Giuliano Rampado (TOL, 3rd M40), Trude Unterhofer (TOL, 2nd W70), Rosaria Travella (TOL, 3rd W70).

South Tyrol also strong in the relay

After the long distance races, the relay competitions took place in the same area. In the men's elite category, Jonas Rass ran the first section for the TOL and finished 1min 45sec behind. Mikhail Mamleev was able to take the lead on the second stretch, Klaus Schgaguler brought the victory safely to the finish. In the women's race, Carlotta Scalet from SC Meran took the lead on the first leg, which Heike Torggler was able to hold on the second leg despite losing some time. Christine Kirchlechner did another good run and so nothing stood in the way of winning the Italian championship title in the relay.

In addition, the SCM relay team with Emma Garber, Johanna Hölzl and Vera Chiusole won in the girls category up to 17, and the TOL team with Tiziano Braiato, Michele Paganini and Lukas Patscheider won in the boys category up to 17. At the Masters there were two more Italian championship titles for the TOL: Verena Troi, Federica Ragona and Sabine Rottensteiner won in the W35 category, and Dario Beltramba, Rudi Mair and Oleg Anuchkin won in the M45 category. Third place went to Christine Schgaguler, Trude Unterhofer and Elisabeth Gruber (TOL) in the W55 category.

Last weekend the Italian Long Distance and Relay Orienteering Championships took place in Sgonico near Trieste.
