Svoljšak and Song are the new tower lords in Rabenstein

In the pouring rain, the men had a thrilling duel. But it didn't take place as expected between the Russian world champion Maxim Tomilov and vice-champion Hee Yong Park (Korea), but rather between the Slovenian Janez Svoljšak and the Swiss Yannick Glatthard, two up-and-coming talents in the international ice climbing circuit. In the end, Svoljšak had the better end, being the only participant to make it to the top - i.e. to the end of the route.

The 22-year-old Slovenian was able to celebrate his first World Cup victory and was also crowned European champion, as this title was awarded during the stage in South Tyrol. Park took third place in the World Cup, while Alexey Tomilov of Russia won the European Championships bronze medal. Maxim Tomilov, however, took the overall World Cup ranking in difficult climbing.

Rainer slips off a hold in the finale

The winner among women is Han Na Rai Song. The Korean, who was also the only finalist to reach the top, lost out to Petra Klingler from Switzerland and the Russian Maryam Filippova. Klingler was crowned European champion, ahead of Filippova and her compatriot Ekaterina Vlasova. Angelika Rainer, the three-time world champion from Merano, risked everything in the final, but slipped from a hold and took fifth place in the World Cup and fourth place in the European Championship rankings.

The Russian Maria Tolokonina took the overall World Cup ranking in difficult climbing. She was already the winner before the stage in Rabenstein, where she couldn't get past eighth place after three wins in a row.

Russia excels in speed climbing

Speed climbing is about covering 15 meters horizontally on the ice tower as quickly as possible. In this discipline, the Russian athletes are in a class of their own and they lived up to their role as favorites. In the men's category, Radomir Proshchenko won on Saturday with a time of 8,29 seconds. In his first World Cup victory, he beat his two compatriots Egor Trapeznikov (8,77) and Pavel Batushev (8,97). The best non-Russian was the Iranian Mohammadreza Safdarian Korouyeh (9,42). Maxim Tomilov, the overall World Cup winner in this discipline, had to settle for 13th place.

Three climbers from the largest country in the world were also on the women's podium. The victory went to Maria Tolokonina (11,44), who won three out of four competitions in this discipline this season and thus also won this discipline World Cup. Second place went to Ekaterina Koshcheeva (12,66), third place was Maryam Filippova (12,96). Proshchenko and Tolokonina can now also call themselves European champions in speed climbing, because the continental title was also awarded here as part of the World Cup in Rabenstein.

After the World Cup is before the Youth and Junior World Championships

The World Cup stage in Rabenstein was also an overwhelming success this season. But Reinhard Graf and his many helpers cannot rest on their laurels. The World Championships in the U5, U7 and U22 age groups will be held this week, from Friday 19th to Sunday 16th February.

Svoljšak and Song are the new tower lords in Rabenstein

There were two new winning faces at the Ice Climbing World Cup in Rabenstein on Sunday. In the difficult climbing, the Slovenian Janez Svoljšak and the Korean Han Na Rai Song prevailed in a high-class final.
