Tombolato celebrates his World Cup debut in Salt Lake City

The 20-year-old from Bolzano competed in the 1000m, which was on the program twice in the 2012 Olympic city. In the first 1000m run, Tombolato missed direct qualification for the quarter-finals with fourth place in her heat in 1:37.139 minutes. Tombolato then also failed in the repechage heats in 1:37.517 minutes and ultimately had to settle for 24th place overall. The World Cup victory in this competition went to the Canadian Marianne St. Gelais. Elena Viviani, relay bronze medalist at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, took 13th place as the best “Azzurra”, Ylenia Tota was 21st. Things went better for the young woman from Bolzano in the second 1000m run. Here Tombolato also missed qualifying for the quarter-finals in fourth place in the heats, but set a new personal best in 1:33.677 minutes. Her old record was 1:34.768 minutes, set on December 1, 2013 in Pontebba. In the repechage run, Tombolato ran out of energy and in the end “only” 25th place overall came out.

Tombolato is only the second South Tyrolean in the Short Track World Cup After Hugo Herrnhof, Tombolato is only the second athlete from South Tyrol to compete in the Short Track World Cup. The Pusterer, who won relay gold in Lillehammer in 1994, took part in three World Cups in his last active season in the 1997/98 season, when the Short Track World Cup was introduced. Tombolato was called up to the senior national team this year and moved from Bolzano to Courmayeur to train with the national team. Marco Bertoldi was the last South Tyrolean to make it into the senior national team. However, the man from Bolzano was injured and ended his career six years ago. Next week Federica Tombolato will also compete at the second stop in the Short Track World Cup in Montreal, Canada.
