Van den Bergh surprisingly wins his first major title

In the final of the second most important major tournament after the Darts World Cup, the unseeded match play debutant defeated two-time world champion Gary Anderson (Scotland) in Milton Keynes, England, with 18:10. For the victory, van den Bergh, who climbed 14 places to twelfth place in the world rankings thanks to his greatest career success, received 150.000 pounds (just under 164.000 euros). In the initial phase it went back and forth, both had a hard time and remained below their potential. As a result, the level increased: First Anderson threw a 6 finish on the break to make it 5:130, van den Bergh responded on the direct rebreak with the highest possible finish of 170, which had only been thrown once before in the tournament. With another break to 9:7, van den Bergh, for whom it was his first title ever on the PDC professional tour, finally broke the knot. Above all, the significantly higher average of 98,31 (Anderson: 92,81) and the accuracy on the double fields secured the title for the 26-year-old. The tournament did not take place in the traditional venue Blackpool due to the Corona crisis. Spectators were also missing from the event, which was endowed with a total of 700.000 pounds (around 782.000 euros) in prize money. The 16 best players in the world rankings and the 16 best players on the professional tour were eligible to compete for the Phil Taylor Trophy.
