VSS celebrates its 50th anniversary

The VSS was founded in 1970 as an umbrella organization of German and Ladin-speaking amateur sports clubs and has been committed to sport in South Tyrol ever since. Originally a political mouthpiece, the association has now developed into an important service provider for sport in South Tyrol.

After 50 years of success, this important anniversary was celebrated on October 30th in the Kurhaus in Merano. The festivities opened with greetings from VSS chairman Günther Andergassen. “We have come together today to celebrate the success story of VSS and to express our gratitude to all those who have borne responsibility, contributed their passion and expertise and to those who are carrying on the legacy today,” Andergassen said in his speech. In an illustrious round of discussions, the former VSS chairmen Walter Plunger and Walter Ausserhofer discussed the 50-year history of the association together with former governor Durnwalder, the former VSS managing director Manfred Call and the president of the SSV Bozen Evi Seebacher. Everyone came to the same conclusion: “Today’s South Tyrolean sports world, as we know and appreciate it, would not have been possible without the work of the VSS.”

During the celebrations, Klaus von Dellemann was also honored for his many years of work as an employee and as managing director of the VSS. VSS chairman Günther Andergassen and state governor Arno Kompatscher made von Dellemann an honorary member of the VSS and presented him with the badge of honor. “Klaus von Dellemann was a pillar in the VSS for almost three decades. He is an athlete and sports official with heart and soul,” said Andergassen about Klaus von Dellemann’s valuable work. The VSS founding story The VSS was founded on November 28.11.1970, XNUMX as a representative of the German and Ladin-speaking sports clubs in South Tyrol. The promoters were Sepp Rinner, Bruno Ganner, Walter Seibstock, Emil Gutweniger, Werner Schönhuber, Emil Kastlunger, Walter Natzler, Klaus Seebacher, Fredi Dissertori (first managing director), Ossi Pircher (founding chairman). As the responsible state councilor, Franz Spögler was also one of the obstetricians.

A sports-political background served as the driving force. On the one hand, sport in South Tyrol lacked the necessary funding, and on the other hand, the South Tyroleans had little influence on sports policy in the regional associations, which were all based in Trento. One of the demands was the establishment of autonomous state committees, equipped with the powers of a regional committee. Until these state committees were set up in the early 90s, there was hardly any youth support in the specialist sports associations. Here, the VSS carried out valuable development work through the youth development programs and the numerous performance centers, which is still valid today. In the year it was founded, the VSS had 91 member clubs. That was 67,4 percent of all German and Ladin-speaking clubs in South Tyrol. The VSS today Today the VSS has 497 member associations with 1.090 sections and almost 85.000 members, making the VSS the largest interest group in the country. Thousands of athletes take part in various VSS competitions and events in the 17 sports departments every year. The activities of the VSS are generously supported by the South Tyrolean Raiffeisen Association and the Raiffeisenkassen.

Today, the VSS is primarily a service provider for clubs and as such offers a comprehensive range of information and services. Through youth support programs and training and further education measures, the VSS does valuable basic work that makes the great sporting successes of South Tyrolean athletes possible. The VSS also provides inspiration by taking up and promoting new developments and stimulating them through actions.

The Association of Sports Clubs of South Tyrol (VSS) celebrated its 30th founding anniversary on October 50th in the Kurhaus Meran. Current and former board members, speakers, political pioneers, sponsors and representatives of specialist sports associations looked back on the past 50 years.
