WADA “sad” about CAS chaos - budget should grow

Pyeongchang (SID) The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has criticized the ongoing chaos surrounding the Russian CAS cases ahead of the Pyeongchang Olympics. "I'm sad that we have to deal with these things all day," said WADA President Craig Reedie in Pyeongchang. WADA noted "with great concern" the CAS's lifting of life-long Olympic bans for 39 Russian athletes. "I wonder how the CAS is supposed to come to different decisions when three commissions have previously proven systematic manipulations by Russia." WADA had called for tougher action against Russian athletes and recently confirmed the suspension of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA). When asked when the suspension would be lifted, Reedie said: "I hope in the next few months when the dust settles." "The fight against doping is becoming increasingly difficult," said Ben McDevitt from WADA's Observer team. In collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), WADA has stepped up the fight against doping for Pyeongchang. Since April 2017, 17.000 pre-tests have been carried out on athletes, and there will be 2500 doping controls during the Games. The doping hunters have big plans for the coming years, but the WADA headquarters in Montreal needs more money. The annual budget is currently 30 million US dollars (24 million euros). By 2021, when the new WADA code is developed, the budget is expected to increase to 45 million dollars (36 million euros). “Getting more money from governments is a difficult job,” Reedie said.
