Paris and Wierer are South Tyrol's athletes of the year

The “Dolomiten” readers made a clear decision: biathlon star Dorothea Wierer and skiing phenomenon Dominik Paris were allowed to accept the coveted trophies on Saturday. Both athletes confidently beat the competition: Wierer received 13.771 votes and therefore over 10.000 more than the second-place snowboarder Nadya Ochner (3.221). Third place went to disabled athlete Kathrin Oberhauser (3). In the men's field, Paris triumphed with 2.288 votes ahead of mountain biker Gerhard Kerschbaumer (9.585) and tennis ace Andreas Seppi (3.109).

Not the first time for either of them Wierer and Paris are two worthy successors to Johanna Schnarf and Dominik Windisch, who were named athletes of the year last year. However, it is not the first time for both the Niederrasner and the Ultners that they have grabbed the coveted trophies: Wierer won the election in 2014 and 2015, Paris already celebrated in 2012. HC Bozen wins big “Dolomiten” readers have cast almost 100.000 votes in the past few weeks. Not only the South Tyrolean athletes were chosen, but also the team and the coach of the year. South Tyrol's best ice hockey team won in both categories: HCB Südtirol Alperia, which stormed from last place in the table to the championship throne in 2018 and wrote the sports fairy tale of the year, won the team prize (8.762 votes). Kai Suikkanen, coach of the championship team and now ex-coach of Bozen, was named Coach of the Year (5.691).

Second and third place in the team rankings went to Italian Cup winner St. Georgen (2) and AHL runner-up Ritten (3). Among the trainers, biathlon coach Andreas Zingerle (3.117) and St. Georgen trainer Patrizio Morini (2.005) took second and third place.

Skier Alex Vinatzer and badminton player Katharina Fink secured the young talent award.
