Winter Games 2026: Europe remains a shaky candidate

Winter Olympics in the Alps, where winter sports are at home and where their traditions live? This dream of IOC President Thomas Bach is almost a thing of the past after two applicants for the 2026 Games were lost in Sion/Switzerland and the Austrian cities of Graz/Schladming. And further early candidate farewells cannot be ruled out.

IOC advises in Lausanne The 2026 Winter Games will be the top priority at the International Olympic Committee's executive session in Lausanne on Wednesday. There can also be a memorable anniversary in eight years: 20 years of the Winter Games outside Europe. Because in Stockholm the population could still say stop - or the politicians: there are parliamentary elections in Sweden on September 9th. Italy's trio of cities, Milan, Turin and Cortina d'Ampezzo, could also be slowed down. Rome had to withdraw its Summer Games applications for 2020 and 2024: the government intervened once, and the city leader intervened the second time. The last time Turin hosted the Olympics was in 2006. The IOC leadership will discuss the 2026 Winter Games and the remaining five candidates on Wednesday at the start of the three-day meeting. In addition to Stockholm and Italy's group of cities, Erzurum/Turkey as outsiders as well as Calgary/Canada and Sapporo/Japan are also in the running. Winter Games 2026: Decision 2019 The decision on the award of the 2026 winter edition will be made in Milan next year in September. Will the people in the candidate countries have by then also realized that the IOC has decided on more than 100 measures to significantly reduce the costs for the 2026 Winter Games host and to better adapt the format and program to the host city? Compared to the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, the costs are expected to fall by around $527 million four years later and the IOC subsidy will increase to $925 million (2022: $880 million).

Finding applicants for the Olympic Games is not easy for the IOC. Sion and Graz/Schladming have withdrawn from the 2026 Winter Games. The IOC executive will discuss the application issue as a priority in Lausanne.
