World Cup qualification: newly formed rugby team suffers significant defeat

Cluj-Napoca (SID) The German national rugby team suffered a bitter setback at the start of the second half of qualifying for the 2019 World Cup. Without the best-performing players, coach Pablo Lemoine's completely reformed team lost without any chance against eight-time World Cup participants Romania with 6:85 (6:31). Last year, the German Rugby Association (DRV) team raised hopes of taking part in a World Cup finals for the first time with a surprise win (41:38) against the favored Romanians. However, in Cluj, Romania, the German 15-man national team had to compete with a completely new team. The reason was the failed extension of the collaboration with patron Hans-Peter Wild in the summer. When all national players employed by Wild's non-profit Wild Rugby Academy (WRA) foundation, including South African national coach Kobus Potgieter, boycotted an international test match against Chile in November, the conflict escalated and the DRV put together a new national team. DRV President Klaus Blank also resigned on Thursday and complained about a smear campaign with anonymous threatening calls and reputation-damaging publications.
