Two South Tyroleans on the “Walk of Fame” in the Foro Italico

The “Walk of Fame” in the Foro Italico is very reminiscent of the well-known sidewalk in Los Angeles, but instead of the names of countless Hollywood stars, those of Italy's greatest athletes of all time are immortalized in the ground. The list includes 100 former athletes, from Dino Zoff to Sara Simeoni and Josefa Idem to Alberto Tomba. The names of two South Tyrolean athletes are engraved on two tiles, namely those of diver Klaus Dibiasi and ski racer Gustav Thöni.

Dibiasi and Thöni: title, title, title...

To date, Dibiasi is the only Italian Olympic champion in diving. He won the gold medal in Mexico City (1968), Munich (1972) and Montreal (1976). On top of that, the native of Bolzano won two world championships and three European championship titles, two Olympic silver medals, two World Cup silver medals and one European Championship silver medal. Dibiasi is 13-time Italian champion on tower and 5-time Italian champion on 3 m board, 11-time Italian champion indoors, and 7-time European Cup winner.

The successes of Gustav Thöni, who was one of the most successful racers ever in the 1970s, fall into the same sporting era. He won the overall ranking of the Ski World Cup four times and 24 World Cup races, became world champion four times and won three medals at the Olympic Games (one gold and two silver). After retiring from top-level sport, the Trafoier - similar to Dibiasi - celebrated numerous further successes as a coach.

Only athletes who are no longer active may be immortalized in the "Walk of Fame". The list was compiled on October 28, 2014. That's why Armin Zöggeler, for example, is missing because he only officially resigned this year. Coni President Malagò announced that the list will be expanded every year and that next time the Völlan toboggan legend will also receive its stone in the Foro Italico.

Two South Tyroleans on the “Walk of Fame” in the Foro Italico

A hundred stones for as many outstanding Italian athletes – that is the new “Walk of Fame” that was opened on Thursday at the headquarters of the National Olympic Committee (CONI) in Rome. Klaus Dibiasi and Gustav Thöni are also among the big stars.
