Two South Tyrolean podium places at the start of the Rollerski World Cup final

Dietmar Nöckler ran an extremely strong race among men. The 23-year-old from Pusteria (he will celebrate his 24th birthday in two weeks) was the fastest on all sections in fantastic weather and ideal running temperatures of around 10 degrees Celsius and reached the finish after 22.12,30:24,17 minutes. With this record he left the World Cup leader Anders Svanebo from Sweden behind by 22.38,12 seconds. “I'm in great shape and feel really strong. However, I never imagined that I would win today – and especially with such a big lead. I made ideal use of the home advantage. I especially know the descents, which are very fast, inside out,” said Dietmar Nöckler at the finish. Florian Kostner also appeared on the start list, but the 32-year-old from Val Gardena decided not to take part at short notice.

Hundredth thriller for women

The women's race, which was a total of eight kilometers long and also took place using the classic technique, was much more exciting. It was a real thriller until the end. Local hero Stephanie Santer led Marika Sundin by exactly five seconds at halftime. The Swede, who is also at the top of the overall standings, turned on the turbo on the second loop and was 0,53 seconds ahead of Santer at the finish. Russian Elena Rodina came third, 22,09 seconds slower than Sundin.

“The fact that I came second by 0,53 seconds doesn’t make me sad or even angry at all. In fact, I'm surprised that it went so well. But the slopes – practically on my doorstep – suit me. Last year I also made it to the podium. The difficult thing is the descents, which are very fast,” said second-place finisher Stephanie Santer.

Russian juniors particularly strong

However, the races in the junior class can be summarized under the title Russian Festival. Five out of six podium places went to the Kremlin state. In the juniors, Vadim Andreev came out ahead of his compatriots Anton Budylov and Alexander Gavrilov in 24.15,13:18.07,53 minutes. In the junior women's category, the winner was Elena Lukianova (XNUMX:XNUMX minutes), ahead of Kira Claudi from Germany and Liubov Skrebova.

OC boss Herbert Santer was also visibly satisfied with the first day of competition. “Everything went smoothly, that is thanks to our employees, whom I would like to thank very much for their support. And the weather gods meant it very well for us, with bright sunshine and cloudless skies,” said Santer.

The Roller Ski World Cup in Toblach continues on Saturday with the team sprint for men and women, before the free cross-country skiing technique takes place on Sunday.
