2 sets, 2 tiebreaks: Sinner's US adventure continues

Sinner prevailed on Thursday evening (CEST) in the round of 45 against the American Sebastian Korda (ATP 2) after 2 sets and 7 tiebreaks with 6:7 (3:2). Especially in the second set, the young man from Sexten showed strong nerves in a difficult phase for him and confidently turned a set that had almost been lost.

Sinner and his doubles partner Korda had an exciting tennis match from the start. After both served their serves relatively confidently in the first set until the 5th game, Sinner finally missed 2 break chances when the score was 2:3. When the score was 4:4, the 19-year-old from Puster finally did better and used the second break ball. In the very next game, Sinner conceded the rebreak to make it 5:5. Then both served again, which sent it to a tiebreak. At the right time, Sinner got two mini-breaks in a row, and on his own serve he finally secured the set in the tiebreak (2:7).

In the 2nd set, the Sexton player conceded the break in the 5th game to make it 2:3. Now Korda played big, the momentum was now clearly on the 21-year-old American's side. After the 4:2 lead, he managed another break to make it 5:2. Sinner had a hard time in this phase - but once again showed morale and strong nerves. Sinner managed the rebreak to make it 3:5 without losing any points. After 4:5 he managed the break to equalize. The momentum had now completely switched to the South Tyrolean. Sinner turned the game around and took the lead 6:5. However, Korda came back again and was able to equalize on his own serve.

Just like in the first set, the second also went into a tiebreak. The first point went to Korda when Sinner served. But then the Sesto native turned up the heat and scored 6 points in a row. He then missed the first two match points on his own serve. The game was ultimately decided by a double fault from the American. After 2:1 hours of play it was clear: Jannik Sinner is in the quarterfinals of the ATP 56 tournament in Washington. There the South Tyrolean will meet the American Steve Johnson (ATP 500) on Friday evening (CEST).
