The Hopman Cup begins on Saturday

The tournament was named after the former world-class player and coach Harry Hopman (1906-1985). He coached Australia's Davis Cup team from 1938 to 1969 and won the Salad Bowl 15 times during that time. The Hopman Cup takes place in Perth, the city of 1,5 million on Australia's north-west coast. Since last year it has been held in the new Perth Arena.

Italy's tennis players are among the eight participating teams. Also there: Andreas Seppi, who competed with Francesca Schiavone last year. This season, however, he will compete together with Flavia Pennetta from Brindisi.

Start against number one

The “Azzurri” slipped from third to sixth place in the tournament rankings within twelve months. Accordingly, Seppi and Pennetta compete in Circle A together with Poland (1), Canada (4) and Australia (7). The USA (2), France (3), Czech Republic (5) and Spain (8) play in the parallel group.

The Italian duo will open the tournament on Saturday against Poland's Grzegorz Panfil and Agnieszka Radwanska. Panfil replaces Poland's number one Jerzy Janowicz, who had to cancel at short notice.

After preparing for the season in Bordighera in Liguria, Seppi set off for Australia on Christmas Day.

The Hopman Cup begins on Saturday

From December 28, 2013 to January 4, 2014, Andreas Seppi will be taking part in the Hopman Cup in Perth for the second time in a row, the traditional team tournament that tennis players usually use as a final test of form for the Australian Open.
