Andreas Seppi moves into the second round of the US Open

Andreas Seppi, number 49 in the ATP rankings, got off to a good start today. In the third game, the Kalterer, who fended off a total of eight break points in the first set (three when the score was 1:0, five when the score was 1:3), took serve from Stakhovsky for the first time and then took the set at 6 with another break :3 points. In the second half of the game, Seppi initially pulled away to 5-0 before his Ukrainian opponent scored the first point. In the following game, the Kalterer player delivered his serve safely and won the second set.

The third set, however, was very even. Seppi took the lead 2-1 with a break, but Stakhovsky immediately had the right answer and equalized to 2-2. With the score at 4:4, Seppi took serve again from the Ukrainian, number 93 in the world, and after an hour and 55 minutes of play, used the first match point on his own serve to win 6:3, 6:1, 6:4. In the next round he will face the winner of the match Mikhail Youzhny (Russia, number 21 on the seeding list) against Nick Kyrgios (Australian).

This year, the Kalterer is playing in Flushing Meadows for the eleventh time. In 2008 and the previous year he made it to the third round. In 2004, when he took part for the first time, he was eliminated in the second round, but in his other seven appearances he was always eliminated in the starting round. Last year, Seppi defeated the Belgian Xavier Malisse and the Indian Somdev Devvarman before losing in five sets to the Uzbek Denis Istomin.
