Andreas Seppi moves into the round of 16 in Sydney

Andreas Seppi celebrated his first victory of the new tennis season on the night of Monday to Tuesday. The 34-year-old from Kalter narrowly prevailed in the starting round of the ATP 250 tournament in Sydney against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy (ATP 36) 7:5, 2:6 and 6:4 after almost two hours of play. In the doubles, however, Seppi and the Serbian Dusan Lajovic were eliminated against the local wild card duo Alex Bolt/Matt Reid.

Seppi is currently number 37 in the ATP world rankings and seeded number 8 in Sydney. On Monday he was overtaken in the ATP rankings by Chardy, who reached the semi-finals in Brisbane last week. The Frenchman is now 36. A balanced, exciting match was expected. And so it happened.

The 31-year-old Frenchman got off to a better start and took the lead 5-2. But Seppi reacted promptly, then won five games in a row (four of them even to zero) and secured the first set with 7:5 points. In the second period, Chardy took serve from Kalterer to make it 4:2 and then won 6:2. In the third, decisive set, Seppi pulled away with a break to 4:2, then fended off a break point from the Frenchman in the tenth game and used his third match point after 1:51 hours of play to make the final score 6:4.

In the round of 16 against Klizan In the round of 2, the Kalterer will face the Slovakian Martin Klizan (ATP 40) on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, in the second match after 4 a.m. CET. Seppi leads the direct encounters with 2-6 wins. Last year Seppi and Klizan met twice. The Slovakian won 3:7, 6:2(6) in Rotterdam in February, and Seppi then got revenge 1:7, 6:6(XNUMX) in Moscow in October. Curious: Seppi then made it to the semi-finals of both tournaments.

In the doubles, however, the Kalterer player was eliminated. With his Serbian partner Dusan Lajovic, he had to admit defeat to the local wild card duo Alex Bolt/Matt Reid 3:6, 6:7(6) in the first round on Tuesday. Seppi/Lajovic missed three set points in the tiebreak of the second period.
