ATP Challenger Val Gardena: New hard courts laid

A new surface has been laid in the tennis hall in Runggaditsch in the last few weeks. Instead of the outdated ultra-fast carpet (Bross Slide), an acrylic resin covering was installed. Practically all hard court tournaments on the ATP and WTA tours are played on such surfaces. “We are convinced that we have also become more attractive for professional players, as there is now no need to switch from the hard courts of tournaments in Europe to the old carpet surface,” says tournament director Wolfgang Wanker. The new surface is rated ITF 4 by the international tennis association and is therefore one of the “fast medium” surfaces.

Last wild cards to Arnaboldi (main draw) and Nicolussi and Rigamonti (qualification) Today the organizing committee in Val Gardena awarded the last wild cards. In the main field, the last “invitation” goes to the Italian Andrea Arnaboldi, currently number 210 in the world rankings. Meanwhile, the three Frenchmen Marc Gicquel (ATP 101), Guillaume Rufin (103) and Paul-Henri Mathieu (104) have withdrawn their entry. In their place, the two Austrians Gerald Melzer (ATP 187) and Martin Fischer (194) as well as the Dutchman Thomas Schoorel (192) will move into the main field.

Jacob Nicolussi from Welschnofen from TC Rungg and the Italian Matteo Rigamonti (ATP number 1440) will take part in the qualification. Rigamonti played in Serie C for ASC St. Georgen this year.

Qualification begins on Saturday The ATP Challenger in Val Gardena, worth 64.000 euros, begins on Saturday with the first round qualifying games.
