ATP Val Gardena: Andreas Seppi without losing a set in the semi-finals

Andreas Seppi did not disappoint the many fans in the Runggaditsch tennis hall in the quarter-finals either. With a confident 7:6(4), 6:1 win over Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert (number 281 in the world rankings, Seppi is 23rd), the Kalterer native reached the semi-finals of the Val Gardena tournament. There he will meet a Frenchman again tomorrow: Edouard Roger-Vasselin, number 106 in the world and number six at the tournament in Val Gardena. Seppi won the only duel so far in Nice in 2011.

Today the first set was anything but easy for Seppi, who was once again supported by his family in the stands. Herbert, who thrilled everyone with his five victories (including qualifying) in Val Gardena, risked a lot, including with the second serve, and was rewarded for it. He was able to fend off two break points at 5:5 and forced Seppi into the tiebreak as the first player of the tournament week, which the Kalterer player won 7:4 with three points in a row. In the second set, Herbert felt the many games this week. The Frenchman also became mentally tired and had nothing left to counter Seppi, who continued to play with concentration. With two breaks to 3:1 and 5:1 and winning five games in a row, the 28-year-old from Kalter took the set 6:1 and with it the match.

Roger-Vasselin also didn't lose a set in the semifinals: out for Bolelli Simone Bolelli, however, didn't make it. The Davis Cup player from Italy, seeded number three, was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the confident Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin after 1:27 hours with 4:6, 6:7(6). Like Seppi, Roger-Vasselin moves into the semi-finals without losing a set.

Today Bolelli really wanted to win after the semi-final in 2010 and the first round defeat a year ago against Farrukh Dustov. But Roger-Vasselin, number 106 in the world and number six in Val Gardena, turned out to be a great player who, as in previous matches, played well, especially on the important points. Bolelli had a break point to make it 2-0, but it was he who gave his serve for the first time to make it 3-4 (after a double fault). Roger-Vasselin no longer had to fend off a breakball, he held his service and then won the second set in the tiebreak. Despite a 2-0 lead and a set point at 6:5, Bolelli lost the tiebreak 6:8 and with it the match.

Benjamin Becker and Matteo Viola also in the semi-finals Benjamin Becker defeated number seven seeded Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 6:3, 2:6, 6:3 in the first match of the day. Becker and Bemelmans were in the round of the last eight in Ortisei in 2011. After losing to Philipp Petzschner twelve months ago, Becker made it into the semi-finals at his second attempt today. He won the first set after two breaks (1:0, 6:3), in the second round the number 79 in the world rankings lost the thread and conceded two breaks. In the third round, Becker was on top again. Although he played the first two break points poorly in the fourth game, he then took Bemelmans' serve to make it 4:2 and made the preliminary decision. After 1:34 hours he was in the semi-finals.

Tomorrow Becker will face the Italian Matteo Viola, who won against Karol Beck 6:4, 7:6 (7:4). After only playing two games in round one against the Slovakian in Val Gardena two years ago (2:6, 0:6), he showed his progress on the fast surface this afternoon. In the first set, the 25-year-old from Mestre pulled away to 4:1, conceded the break at 5:3, but still took the first set with a re-break. Viola also led with a break in the second set and served to win the set at 5:4. But Beck fought back and reached the tiebreak, which Viola won 7:4.

Holzer/Prader lose semi-final in doubles In the doubles competition, the two South Tyroleans Thomas Holzer/Patrick Prader were hoping for a place in the final after their unexpected success in the quarter-finals on Wednesday against Colin Ebelthite/Jaroslav Pospisil. But in the semifinals they were dispatched by the number three seeded pairing of Michael Kohlmann/Rameez Junaid (Germany/Australia) 1:6, 3:6 in just 54 minutes. Holzer/Prader never got into the game and conceded a total of four breaks. Kohlmann/Junaid will play in the doubles final against Karol Beck/Rik De Voest on Sunday at 11 a.m. Afterwards the individual final is on the program.
