ATP Winston-Salem: Andreas Seppi handles Tipsarevic

The 33-year-old from Kalter defeated the Serbian Janko Tipsarevic 250:62, 6:2 in just 6 minutes in the first round of the ATP 2 tournament in Winston-Salem in North Carolina.

With this victory, Seppi now also leads the direct encounters against Tipsarevic with 4:3 wins. Two months ago he won in Antalya on grass in three sets 3:6, 6:4, 6:4, followed on Monday evening by his second win of the season on the hard court in Winston-Salem.

Seppi got off to a dream start: with two breaks he moved ahead to 5-1 in the first set, and a little later he used his first set point to make it 6-2. Overall, Seppi only gave up 6 points on her own serve in this section of the game. In the second set, too, Seppi took the serve from the Serb of the same age, who is 66th in the world rankings and twenty places ahead of the Kalterer player, and moved away to 2-0. Shortly afterwards he increased to 5:1 and after 62 minutes he ended the game with his first match point 6:2.

Seppi will face number 12 seeded Brit Alijaz Bedene, who grew up in Slovenia, in the second round. Seppi has only played against the world number 46 once in his career, in 2013 at the Masters 1000 in Miami, where he narrowly held on with 7:5, 5:7, 7:5.

The Kalterer native is taking part in the Winston-Salem tournament for the fourth time this year. He achieved his best result three years ago when he lost 4:6, 4:6 to Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu in the quarterfinals. Last year, Seppi had to admit defeat to the German Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round.
