Italo surprise is over: Swiatek and Gauff storm into the final

With her 34th success in a row, Polish world number one Iga Swiatek stormed into the final at the French Open in Paris. The 21-year-old won against Russian Darja Kasatkina 6:2, 6:1 on Thursday and will face US teenager Cori Gauff in the final on Saturday. The 18-year-old also defeated Martina Trevisan from Italy 6:3, 6:1, making her the youngest French Open finalist since Kim Clijsters 21 years ago.

Swiatek, who celebrated her only Grand Slam title to date at the Stade Roland Garros in 2020, ended Serena Williams' super series from 2000 with her lightning success against Kasatkina. Trevisan then had to be treated for a few minutes. The Italian won the tournament in Rabat in the run-up to the French Open and has therefore played a lot recently. This now became noticeable, Trevisan started the second set with a thick thigh bandage. The Italian tried everything again here, but Gauff was too strong in her first Grand Slam semi-final and used her first match point after 1:28 hours.

“I'm a little shocked right now. I don’t have words that can describe it,” Gauff said after her victory. She wants to go into the final on Saturday with the same composure as she has in all the games in the Bois de Boulogne so far. “There are so many things happening in the world right now, especially in the USA. This is just a tennis match,” said Gauff, who is the youngest player to reach a final at a Grand Slam since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004.
