Out in the quarter-finals: strong Federer is defeated by stronger Thiem

The 37-year-old Swiss lost to world number five Dominik Thiem (Austria) 6:3, 6:7 (11:13), 4:6 and thus missed the “giant duel” in the semifinals against world number one Novak Djokovic. The Serb moved into the semifinals without a fight after opponent Marin Cilic (Croatia) withdrew.

Thiem, who lost to German number 1 Alexander Zverev in the final in Madrid last year, converted his second match point after 2:10 hours in a high-class match. In the sixth duel with Federer he celebrated his fourth victory. Thiem won the previous only clay court duel in the round of 2016 in Rome in XNUMX, and the only previous comparison in the current season went to the Austrian in the Indian Wells final.

Against Thiem, who most recently won the tournament in Barcelona without losing a set, Federer played much more consistently in his third match after almost three years away from the clay court than in his shaking win against the Frenchman and Seppi conqueror Gael Monfils in the round of 16. In the second round, however, Federer missed two match points before Thiem used his sixth set point to equalize.

The Austrian was ahead with a break early in the decisive set. Federer equalized to 4:4, but then lost his serve game again.

Alexander Zverev will play against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday evening for a place in the semi-finals. If Zverev leaves, he will lose his fourth place in the world rankings to Thiem.
