Australian Open: Seppi wrestles Gabashvili down

The tennis professional from Kaltern, who is ranked number 28 in Australia, had a bitterly difficult time against the number 50 in the world, but in the end he won 3:6, 7:6(4), 6:4 and 7:6 thanks to a final show of strength (10). The match lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes.

For “late starter” Seppi, the game on Court 13 started very badly: with an early loss of serve, he paved the way for Gabashvili to win the first set. This was perfect after another break from the Georgia native to make it 6:3. In the second round, neither opponent gave up a service and so in the end it was Seppi who had the upper hand in the tiebreak with 7:4. This partial success inspired the South Tyrolean in the third set. When the score was 5:4, he took Gabashvili's serve and moved to 6:4.

The fifth match point is there

Now Seppi seemed to have all the trump cards in the fourth set. He immediately landed a break and moved to 3-0. When the score was 5:3, he finally had the chance to close the match for the first time. However, he missed this and allowed Gabashvili to get back into the game with a break. The Russian made things really exciting again, first equalizing to 5:5 and later to 6:6. The following tiebreak then developed into a real thriller. Seppi himself played a large part in this, as he left the winning ball unused twice on his own serve and once on his opponent's serve. It wasn't until the score was 11:10 that the 31-year-old finally used his fifth match point. A double fault from Gabashvili gave Seppi his seventh win in his ninth duel with the Eastern European.

Now for the first time against Denis Kudla

In the second round, Seppi will face world number 69 Denis Kudla. This is the first duel ever between the Überetscher and the 23-year-old American. The winner of this encounter is expected to have a third-round match against world number one Novak Djokovic.

Seppi also competes in the doubles in Melbourne. With the Italian Marco Cecchinato he will face the French Julien Benneteau/Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round.
