Strong Sinner: Semifinals in Aktobe

The 17-year-old from Sesto defeated Russian qualifier Timur Kiyamov 1:56, 6:4, 2:6 in the quarterfinals on Friday after 6:3 hours of play and moved into an ITF semifinal for the second time in his career. There he will meet another qualifier, 8-year-old Dutchman Niels Lootsma, on Saturday at 24 a.m. CET.

After his two wins against the Belarusian Aliaksandr Liaonenka and the Russian Artem Dubrivnyy, Sinner also prevailed against Kiyamov. The Puster player started off strong and took the lead 5-0 with three breaks, but Kiyamov then got into the game better and reduced the lead to 4-5. After a little more than half an hour, Sinner used his first set point to make it 6:4.

In the second period, the Russian first moved ahead to 4:1 and then took the set with 6:2 points. The third, decisive period of the game began with a break from Sinner, who then didn't give up his serve and won 6:3.

For the Sexten native, it is the second success in the second direct duel against Kiyamov, whom he defeated 7:6(6), 6:4 at an ITF tournament in Poland last year. After St. Christina in August of the previous year, it is also the second semi-final for Sinner, but the first in a $25.000 tournament.
