Bernard and Weis make it into the main field

The 8 qualifiers who made it to the main draw of the ITF tournament are: Manuel Bernard, Alexander Weis, Nicoló Inserra, Andrea Guerrieri, Tommaso Roggero, Stefano Reitano and Filippo Mora. Bernard probably caused the biggest sensation yesterday. He beat the highly favored Augusto Virgili, who was already in position 1723 in the world rankings, in three sets with 3:6, 7:7 and 6:6. It was a fantastic battle that the numerous South Tyrolean tennis fans experienced on the Center Court. “We played on equal terms. In the deciding sentence we both suffered from cramps. The fact that I made it makes me incredibly happy.” Making it into the main draw of the ITF tournament in Rungg is the 2-year-old’s greatest success to date in the service of TC Rungg. In the first round on Tuesday he will face Adelchi Virgili (ATP 19), Augusto's brother and Rungg's semi-finalist last year.

Weis, who like Bernard trains in Rungg, also had a task that was anything but easy to overcome on Monday. Nicola Vidal played particularly well in the first set. After that, Weis managed to get into the game better. He increased the pressure and forced Vidal to make more mistakes. In the third set, an early break was enough for Weis to make it 2-1 and win the set 6-4. “Vidal wasn’t an easy opponent for me today. Because of his aggressive play, I couldn't find my way into the game for a sentence. “Overall, I’m happy with my performance,” said Weis. On Tuesday he will face qualifier Edoardo Sardella, who beat Patrick Prader in three sets.

In addition to Prader, the other South Tyroleans Sebastian Brzezinski and Michael Kerschbaumer did not make it into the main field. Brzezinski narrowly lost to Stefano Reitano 6:3, 5:7 and 3:6. Despite the defeat, the 16-year-old proved that he is not wrongly considered one of the greatest talents in South Tyrolean tennis. Kerschbaumer's result was clearer: after a 2:6, 2:6 against Nicoló Inserra, he was eliminated in the third qualifying round of the Sparkassen Trophy 2017.

Tuesday in Rungg promises again tennis at its best. The top game of the first round day is undoubtedly the new edition of the final match in Bozen: Andrea Basso against the former top 100 player Matthias Bachinger. Top favorite Andreas Haider-Maurer, who has a protected ATP ranking of 63, will face Cristian Carli (ATP 700).
