Special premiere: Medvedev triumphs in Rome

Russian tennis professional Daniil Medvedev is in top form shortly before the start of the French Open.

The 27-year-old won the final in Rome against Dane Holger Rune 7:5,7:5 on Sunday and celebrated his sixth title at a Masters 1000 tournament. For the first time ever, the hard court specialist triumphed at an ATP event on clay. This surface will also be played on this surface at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris from next Sunday.

In the upcoming world rankings, he moved past the Serbian Novak Djokovic into second place thanks to his tournament victory. World number one Carlos Alcaraz from Spain surprisingly failed in the third round in Rome.

Numerous interruptions in the women's final

Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan won the WTA tournament in Rome after numerous interruptions due to persistent rain on Sunday night. The Wimbledon champion benefited from the injury-related retirement of her opponent Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine with the score at 6:4 and 1:0. Kalinina complained of pain in her left thigh.

For Rybakina, who reached the final of the Australian Open in January, it was the fifth title of her career and the second this year after her victory in Indian Wells. The 23-year-old will move up to fourth place in the world rankings.
