Bitter end: Seppi failed in Val Gardena

The 33-year-old from Kalter had to admit defeat to the Italian Matteo Donati, number 344 in the world, in two tiebreaks 1:37(6), 7(5) after 6:7 hours at his home tournament in Ortisei.

The match was very even from the start. In the sixth game, Donati Seppi took serve for the first time to make it 4:2, but in return the Kalterer got the rebreak. Both players then served their serves confidently until the score was 6:6. In the tiebreak, Donati had the better end and won 7:5 thanks to a minibreak. Seppi already lost the first set against Caruso in the tiebreak 6:8 yesterday.

The match remained exciting in the second half of the game. Although Seppi could have made it 2-0 with an early break, he missed four break opportunities. On the other side, Donati also had a break point to make it 6:5, but couldn't capitalize on it either. A little later the second set went into a tiebreak. However, Seppi couldn't withstand the enormous pressure. Donati prevailed again 7:5. For the Kalterer native, the dream of a third Val Gardena title has fallen through.

In the semi-finals, Donati will face wild card player Lorenzo Sonego in the all-Italian duel tomorrow, Saturday at 16 p.m. The world number 364. from Turin clearly prevailed today against the German Oscar Otte, number 7 in the tournament, in two sets 6:1, 6:4.

Before that, at 14 p.m., the number 4 seeded Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert and the German qualifier Tim Pütz will face each other in the first semi-final. Today Herbert defeated Marc Sieber from Germany 7:6(3), 3:6, 6:3, while Pütz surprisingly knocked Croatia's Viktor Galovic out of the tournament 6:4, 6:7(1), 6:2.

The double semi-finals also took place in St. Ulrich today. Both games were very even and were only decided in the super tiebreak. The top favorites Sander Arends (NED)/Antonio Sancic (CRO) prevailed against the German-Austrian duo Alexander Satschko/Tristan-Samuel Weissborn 5:7, 6:4, 10:3, while Jeremy Jahn (GER) and Edan Leshem (ISR) had the upper hand against the British Scott Clayton/Jonny O'Mara with 7:6(4), 5:7, 13:11.
