BNL Open: Successful comeback by Patrick Prader

A total of 140 players took part in the tournament in Val Gardena, including almost 50 from the 2nd category. Prader was number 1 among the men in St. Ulrich and lived up to his role as favorite. After the clear quarter-final win against Matteo Siccardi, he had to give up the first set in the tiebreak in the semi-final against number 4 on the seed list, Francesco Salviato, but then won the other two sets 6:3, 6:4. In the final, Prader met surprise man Tommaso Gabrielli. The 22-year-old from Bassano knocked number 2 seed Giacomo Oradini out of the competition in the quarterfinals. Prader started the final fully focused and won the first set with 6:4 points. But then Gabrielli got better and better into the game and won the second period 6:3. In the third, decisive set, Prader immediately moved ahead to 4:1 and finally used his first match ball to win 6:2. This meant that he remained undefeated in the third direct duel against Gabrielli. As a reward, the Barbian received at least 2.450 euros in prize money. “I wasn't really expecting a win here after my long break, but it went better than expected. I was at the pre-qualification in Rome last year and am already looking forward to the tournament in May. Before that, I will compete in the BNL tournaments next week in Rovereto and in 14 days in Vicenza."

Chiesa wins women's tournament, Verena Hofer in the semi-finals In the women's event, local hero Verena Hofer qualified for the semi-finals with a 6:4, 6:2 win against Francesca Sella. Here, however, she had no chance against the experienced Italo-Swiss Lisa Sabino, number 442 in the world. In the final, Sabino also found her champion: Deborah Chiesa from Torbole, who trains in Rovereto with Luca and Andrea Stoppini, showed a very strong performance and won surprisingly clearly with 6:3, 6:2. Chiesa seems to feel particularly comfortable in Ortisei: three months ago she won the doubles at the $10.000 tournament here with Croatian Adrijana Lekaj. There were South Tyrolean victories in the tournaments of the 3rd and 4th categories, with Thomas Berger and Teresa Schwienbacher as well as Jacun Prugger and Martina Charlotte Moser.
