CONI boss shoots against Sinner: “I didn’t like it”

On the weekend has Jannik Sinner decided not to take part in the Summer Games in Tokyo announced. Although he is not the only world-class player who is not traveling to Japan, hardly anyone else's cancellation caused so much discussion.

Since Sinner has recently been far from his best form and is still at the beginning of a long development, the decision seems quite logical from a sporting perspective. The timing of the cancellation and the high hopes that many tennis fans had for Sinner meant that the 19-year-old was caught in the crossfire of criticism.

Giovanni Malagò, President of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), now echoes these sentiments. He exchanged text messages with Sinner and personally respected the South Tyrolean's choice, but he added: "As CONI President, as an Italian, I cannot share this decision."

He also says: “If someone does not adhere to certain values, it is better for them to stay at home.”

When giving reasons for not taking part in the Olympics, Sinner spoke of a “difficult decision” and expressly emphasized that taking part would have been a great honor for him, but it is doubtful whether he had expected such a strong headwind. However, one thing is also certain: If Sinner remains so focused on tennis, he will grow through these difficult moments and will definitely have the chance to prove his skills at the Olympics in the future.
