Cool, cooler, Jannik Sinner: victory in the scandal game

First of all, on the sporting side: Jannik Sinner made it into the quarterfinals at the Miami Open, the second Masters tournament of the season. He defeated the Australian Nick Kyrgios 100:7, 6:6 after a balanced and at times high-class 3 minutes of play.

Kyrgios, who recently defeated a number of top players with his gifted talent and therefore went into the duel as a slight favorite despite his current world ranking position (102), fell back into old, inglorious behavior patterns. Kyrgios was so upset after the 3-7 lead in extra time that he literally turned his playing equipment into kindling and at the same time hurled nasty insults at the referee. He had no choice but to take tough action and punish Kyrgios with a game. Sinner started the second set with 1-0 and his own serve. Kyrgios, who had been described by Sinner as one of his “favorite players” before the game because of his playing skills, politely congratulated his counterpart on the clear victory and paid him the respect that he again missed from the referee afterwards. Without a handshake, he trotted past the referee's chair and disappeared into the dressing room. Sinner, on the other hand, was completely relaxed in the winner's interview. “It was a tough opponent and a mentally demanding game,” he said. Now an underdog awaits On Wednesday Sinner will fight for a semi-final ticket against Argentine outsider Francisco Cerundolo on Center Court from 21 p.m. Although he is only in 103rd position in the world ranking computer, he has already made people sit up and take notice in Miami with victories against the much better ranked Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 57), Reilly Opelka (18) and Frances Tiafoe (31).
