South Tyrolean tennis relies on the tried and tested and a lot of new things

Around 4.000 athletes from 400 teams and 89 clubs already have tennis rackets at hand. They are eagerly awaiting the summer season that is about to begin, the highlight of which is traditionally the “Raiffeisen Tennis Grand Prix”. These include no fewer than 30 tournaments in the Open class, as well as categories 3 and 4. There are also 16 youth tournaments and the numerous Italian Cup championships. “The area of activity is wide-ranging. Our goal must be to create even more interest and enthusiasm for this unique sport. Of course, world-class athletes like Andreas Seppi and Karin Knapp help us immensely.”

Three international tournaments

At the press conference in the Raiffein Hall, hosts Dr. Klaus Schwarz and Roland Sandrin, board member of the national tennis association and acting head of the association in Campania, two organizers of a total of three international tennis tournaments in South Tyrol were also present, namely Wolfgang Wanker from the “Sparkasse ATP Challenger” in Ortisei and Christian Pfeifer from “Future Sparkasse Trophy” from TC Rungg. Wanker has clearly defined his goal for the coming edition: “After the overwhelming success last year, we want to win Andreas Seppi as a big draw this year too. I hope that after the performance in Paris-Bercy he will end his season again with us in Val Gardena. The chances are certainly good.”

The renowned Futures tournament takes place in Rungg in mid-August. “We have left both the timing and the prize money of $15.000+hospitality unchanged. We are very happy that the ITF tournament is taking place in Bolzano the week before, because with a little cooperation we can certainly attract some well-known players,” says Pfeifer.

ATP tournament in Kitzbühel relies on South Tyrol

However, the former Austrian world-class player Alex Antonitsch was invited as a guest of honor. He is the current tournament director of the ATP 250 in Kitzbühel. Antonitsch took advantage of the opportunity and used a lot of wit to promote his tournament: “In Kitzbühel we also want to attract tennis fans from the surrounding regions and this undoubtedly includes South Tyrol. This year's edition will have its own 'South Tyrol Day', with reduced admission and other special offers. Our dream player is of course Andreas Seppi, who has already signaled his willingness to talk on several occasions. With him, as well as Philipp Kohlschreiber from Germany and the Austrian local hero Jürgen Melzer, we would have an incredible field of participants.” For tennis enthusiasts in this country, the ATP tournament in Kitzbühel could be another treat in the eventful upcoming season.
