Davis Cup: Canada becomes the first team in the quarterfinals

After the 2-1 win against Italy at the start, the Canadians also defeated the USA in Group F on Tuesday. Vasek Pospisil and young star Denis Shapovalov won their two singles and secured group victory even before the final doubles.

In Germany's Group C, Argentina beat Chile with a smooth 3-0 win, Diego Schwartzman and Guido Pella in the singles and Maximo Gonzalez/Leonardo Mayer in the doubles secured success. Argentina is the first opponent of the German team on Wednesday, which will compete without its top player Alexander Zverev. On Thursday, Chile awaits captain Michael Kohlmann's team (both 11.00 a.m.).

Last year's finalist and co-favorite France had trouble beating Japan 2-1, only the newly crowned ATP champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut secured the starting victory in Group A in doubles. Colombia has already been eliminated from Group D, one day after 1:2 against Belgium also lost against Australia.

A total of 18 nations will be fighting for the title in Spain until Sunday; the winners of the six three-person groups and the two best runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals. Instead of four singles and a double over three winning sets as before, there are now only two singles and a double over two winning sets each. The format that has been in place since this year had caused a lot of criticism because of the late date and the omission of the atmospheric home and away games.
