Davis Cup: Seppi shoots “Azzurri” into the final

After his opening win on Friday against Ramkumar Ramanathan, the 34-year-old from Kalter also clearly won his second singles match against Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6:1, 6:4 on the Calcutta grass court on Saturday morning and secured the decisive point for Italy's 3-1 win against India.

On Friday, Matteo Berettini also won his singles, while on Saturday Berettini/Bolelli had to admit defeat to the Indian doubles Rohan Bopanna/Divij Sharan in three sets.

With the score at 2-1 for Italy, Seppi remained calm and dominated the game against Prajnesh Gunneswaran, the Indian number 1 and 102 in the world, from the start. The South Tyrolean won the first set 20-6 in just 1 minutes of play, then took serve from his opponent in the second period to make it 3-1 and finally used his second match point after 1:03 hours to make the final score 6-4.

“I’m looking forward to the final tournament” Andreas Seppi “I really played two very good games on grass here in Calcutta and I’m obviously looking forward to the final tournament in Madrid, even though it’s still a long way away,” said Seppi after the match. “In Madrid I think we have a good chance because our team is strong and, more importantly, very balanced.”

The Davis Cup will be held in a new format this year. A total of 18 teams will take part in the final tournament in Madrid from November 24th to 18th. Ten have already qualified: the four semi-finalists of the 2018 Davis Cup, France, Spain, Croatia and USA, two wild cards, which this time were awarded to Argentina and Great Britain, as well as Australia, Japan, Kazakhstan and Italy, the first four teams have already survived the first round of the World Group. Eight more teams will qualify on Saturday. The pairings for the final tournament will be drawn on February 1th.
