Big exclamation mark from Seppi: First clay victory in 3 years

Andreas Seppi, who only returned to the ATP circus a week ago, is contesting his 64th Grand Slam tournament in Paris. With his first round victory over Auger-Aliassime, he proved that the 37-year-old South Tyrolean is far from being a thing of the past. The Canadian young star, who at the age of 20 is already ranked 21st in the world, had to admit defeat to Seppi in four sets (6:3, 7:6/10:8, 4:6, 6:4). While the Kalterer will face Kevin Anderson or Soonwoo Kwon in the second round of Roland Garros, the tournament is over for Auger-Aliassime. Seppi didn't get into the match well in the first few minutes, but fended off two break points in the second game. Auger-Aliassime did the same when the score was 2:2, but Seppi used the third break ball to win the point. The veteran, who had recently been plagued by back and hip pain, remained flawless in his own serve game - even if the Canadian kept having break chances. Auger-Aliassime was unable to use any of them. Finally, after 42 minutes, Seppi converted his second set point to take the lead 1-0. Seppi lets his routine play out The two opponents exchanged blows in the second set. Both players served well, made few mistakes in the summer temperatures and bright sunshine and hardly allowed any break points. After Seppi missed three set points at 5:4, it went into the tie-break. There the South Tyrolean showed strong nerves and secured the second set. Auger-Aliassime was clearly dissatisfied. The youngster wanted to go one step further with all his might, but Seppi played out his entire routine that afternoon. Although the Kalterer player was by no means flawless, Seppi recovered from the (few) low blows better than his opponent, who always seemed to struggle with his performance. Seppi didn't give up even after losing the third set, showed a strong mental state and converted his first match point to victory after 3.36 hours. It is Andreas Seppi's first win since October 27th against Aslan Karatsev in Nur Sultan and the first Ashes victory since May 23rd 2018 (against Bernabe Zapata Miralles in Geneva). In the second round, the veteran will now face Soonwoo Kwon (ATP 91) from South Korea, who defeated Kevin Anderson in four sets (ATP 100).
