The new world rankings are astonishing

The Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz has everything to become the legitimate successor to Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic: talent, attitude, athleticism, game intelligence, nerves. The 19-year-old US Open champion is a decade-long talent and is now number one in the world rankings (the youngest player of all time). However, his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero sees Alcaraz as far from being at the peak of his performance.

“I think he has reached about 60 percent of his possibilities,” said Ferrero after his protégé’s final victory against Casper Ruud in New York. Alcaraz is already incredibly good in his teens. The previous leader Daniil Medvedev, however, slipped to fourth place. “He was thin – like spaghetti.” Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero about the 15-year-old Alcaraz Coach Ferrero saw early on what could be possible for the young Spaniard. “When he came to my academy at 15, it was clear that he was different from his peers,” remembers the Spaniard, who won the French Open in 2003 and became number one himself. “He was explosive, had quick hands, quick legs.” Ferrero laughs. “But he was thin – like spaghetti. It still needed a lot of work. But he is made for this stage, a great competitor.” Sinner makes up two places Jannik Sinner has moved up two places in the world rankings by reaching the quarterfinals at the US Open.
