The Sinner numbers: From impressive to alarming

First Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, then Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open and now Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Australian Open: In the last three Grand Slams, Jannik Sinner has played on an equal footing with the world elite - but without ending up as the winner.

What does the 21-year-old lack to achieve great success? The experience, the callousness or the further development of his game? These are questions that only Sinners coaches Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi can answer. What is certain, however, is that Sinner leaves Australia with the certainty that he has demanded significantly more from Tsitsipas compared to the duel last year.

A look at the statistics shows how good Sinner is at his age. Along with Matteo Berrettini (26) and Karen Khachanov (26), the Sesto native is one of only three players who were born after the 80s and have reached the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slams. In addition, Sinner managed to reach the second week - i.e. the round of 13 - eight times in his first 29 Grand Slam participations. For comparison: Rafael Nadal and Djokovic have done this seven times, Andy Murray six times, Roger Federer only five times. His record against lower ranked players is 2021 wins and only one defeat (!), which he suffered against Marton Fucsovics at Wimbledon in XNUMX.

At the same time, the record against higher-ranked players is surprisingly bad: out of 16 matches, the South Tyrolean only won three at Grand Slam level. The general statistics against top 10 players are also not rosy with 9 successes and 22 defeats. Sinner was only able to beat a top 5 crack on 17 occasions - namely Carlos Alcaraz in last year's final in Umag. Sinner knows these numbers and will do everything in his power to reverse the trend this season. He will probably have his next chance at the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier (February 6th to 12th).
