The new infection is said to be the basis for the medical exemption with which Djokovic wants to take part in the Australian Open, which begins on January 17th. A vaccination is actually required for this. Djokovic, an outspoken critic of the vaccination requirement, reported on social media before his departure to Melbourne that there was an exemption for him. He has never disclosed his own vaccination status. Insufficient documents Because of apparently inadequate documents, the Australian authorities withdrew Djokovic's visa upon entry. The tennis star is fighting this cancellation in court. His lawyers are demanding that Djokovic be allowed to leave the quarantine hotel as soon as possible in order to prepare for the Australian Open. The 34-year-old is hoping for his 21st Grand Slam tournament victory in Melbourne. He would be the sole record holder ahead of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Over the past few days, Djokovic supporters have repeatedly gathered in front of his hotel in the Carlton district to express their support. The Czech double specialist Renata Voracova, whose visa was also revoked, described the conditions there as follows: There are guards in the hallway, the room windows must remain closed. “You have to report, everything is rationed,” Voracova told the Czech portal idnes.cz. “I feel a bit like I’m in prison.”

Voracova said she had an exemption to travel to Australia because of a Covid-19 infection she had before Christmas. However, like Djokovic's, her visa was canceled. In contrast to the Serb, the Czech woman did not object to this. The 38-year-old said she “felt a bit like I was in an action movie.” Now she is waiting in the quarantine hotel to leave.
