Doha out for Kerber and Görges

Doha (SID) Former world number one Angelique Kerber (Kiel) and Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) failed in the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in Doha. Kerber lost in a hard-fought game to the current number one and Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) after 2:23 hours 6:7 (4:7), 6:1, 3:6. Shortly afterwards, Görges was the last remaining German to give up in the top-class $3,173 million tournament against two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) with a score of 4:6, 1:2 due to a hip injury. After her tournament victory in Sydney and reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open, Kerber only had to accept her second defeat in the 14th match of the year. In the first Doha semi-final of her career, Görges faced a player from the team of Germany's upcoming Fed Cup semi-final opponent, the Czech Republic (April 21/22), for the third time in the tournament. Meanwhile, Wozniacki also successfully defended her lead in the world rankings thanks to her success in her friends' duel with Kerber. In the event of a defeat, the Romanian Simona Halep, who was also in the semi-finals in Doha and against whom Wozniacki won in the Australian Open final, would have become the new number one on Monday.
