Dominic Thiem celebrates in Berlin

The 26-year-old from Lower Austria defeated the Italian Matteo Berrettini 6:7(4), 6:4 and 10:8 in the match tiebreak in one and a half hours. The final, originally scheduled for 12.00 noon, began more than seven hours late due to continuous rain. The game for third place between the South Tyrolean shooting star Jannik Sinner and Roberto Bautista-Agut would then have been on the program, but due to the delays it was canceled.

Thiem served well in the first set. Whenever his first serve came, the world number three also scored the point – a total of 20 times. And in the tiebreak he was already leading 4-1, but then acted too impatiently and unfocused. And Berrettini, eighth in the world rankings, took advantage of this short period of weakness and didn't give up a point to his opponent in the tiebreak.

In the second set, the 24-year-old Italian had his first break chance of the match at 1-0, but Thiem held his service and then took advantage of his third break chance at 3-3 to make it 4-3. The Australian Open finalist maintained this lead and equalized the set at 6:4, meaning the winner had to be determined in the match tiebreak. Thiem then quickly led 7:3 and finally used his third match point to win.
