An ailing Federer succumbs to Djokovic

The 50-year-old won the 32th duel between the two tennis stars on Thursday in Melbourne after an initially strange and then one-sided game in three sets with 7:6 (7:1), 6:4, 6:3. The pair's first Grand Slam reunion did not come close to the excitement of the longest Wimbledon final in tournament history last summer.

Perfect balance Djokovic continued his impressive record at his favorite tournament. He reached the semi-finals seven times and not only made it to the final seven times, but also won the title. On Sunday, the world number two will meet the German Alexander Zverev or the Austrian Dominic Thiem.

The way Djokovic presented himself, he has every chance of moving closer to the Swiss Federer (17) with his 20th Grand Slam title. Federer started excellently and led 5-2, but then Djokovic only gave his long-term rival a few chances - even in the tiebreak, which he clearly won. In the Wimbledon final over five sets, the Serb won all three tiebreaks and spoiled a tennis coup for Federer despite two match points.

The Basel native took another medical time out after clearly losing the lead in the first set. Already after his spectacular quarter-final success after seven match points fended off against the American Tennys Sandgren, the world number three reported problems with his groin. Afterwards, there was no match against an unleashed Djokovic.
