Endless quarter-finals in Val Gardena: Sonego wins after three hours

Sonego won 7:6 (6), 6:7 (7) and 6:4. In the second semi-final tomorrow, Sonego will face number three seed Alessandro Giannessi, against whom he lost his first duel a month ago at the Challenger in Fairfield.

Gaio and Sonego played without a doubt the most exciting match of the tournament so far. Gaio had the better chances in the first set. He had three break points, Sonego none. With three points in a row, Gaio saves himself in the third set. It was still exciting: Gaio fended off two break points at 3:4 and two match points at 4:5. But after a double fault from Gaio, the game was over for Sonego on the fifth match point.

Giannessi also in the semi-finals As expected, number three Alessandro Giannessi had previously prevailed against his training partner Salvatore Caruso 6:1, 7:6 (3). Giannessi will face the winner of the Italian duel between Lorenzo Sonego and Federico Gaio in the second semi-final tomorrow.

Giannessi also won the third duel with Caruso. “It was a special match because Salvo and I have the same coach (Paolo Cannova). “I got into the match better,” says Giannessi. In no time the favorite led 5-0. Caruso had four break points to make it 5-2, but Giannessi made it 6-1. Giannessi was satisfied in the end: “The match went in the right direction. But now there is no preferred opponent in the semi-finals. The form is right, of course I hope to win the tournament."
